During my life I have heard many criticisms about the Church and even criticisms about the Bible and the writings of St Paul and others; but I have never heard a single criticism about the Lord Jesus Christ.
I suppose in general this may be true. However, I do consider those who deny the existence of the Lord Jesus or who prefer to think of him merely as a “good man” are making a criticism. There is good evidence of his historical existence from secular sources, as well as Christian. And I’ve yet to hear of someone who was simply a “good man” do the miracles that Jesus did. Miracles, it could be debated, need faith but rising from the dead as described in the Biblical account has been subjected to scrutiny by some astute minds. They were surprised to find they could no longer dispute his resurrection! The most notable for me is Who Moved the Stone by Frank Morison.
Yes, I agree. Somebody who thinks Jesus merely as a good man is holding a critical stance. I was using the word “critical” in a negative sense. What I mean is – I’ve never heard anybody say something truly negative about what Jesus has done. Some people may say things like: “Jesus didn’t lead a very successful life did he? – he got himself killed!” But you and I, and all Christians understand why he died, don’t we? Jesus, as we know, was criticised a lot by the established religious community when he lived on earth, and he was very critical of them. Christians, of course, are on Jesus’s side.
I don’t think we need to concern ourselves about whether or not Jesus existed.
Jesus was very good at miracles; my favourite is turning water into wine!
Thinking about our faith is definitely a good thing to do and the Zacharias Trust (zachariastrust.org) is an excellent organisation that can help us to do this if we feel we need their help. For me, however, at my stage of life, my Christian faith and what I believe is more important to me than what I think or want to reason about or want to prove. I don’t think there’s any real point trying to prove something you believe in. If you can prove it, you don’t need to believe it, do you?
In my opinion, somebody who believes in God and in Jesus Christ as God in human form is at a distinct advantage over somebody who doesn’t. I will endeavour to explain this in subsequent blogs.
I’ve decided to give this website a slightly different emphasis based on the Home Page heading: “Making a happier world”. Although it has a distinct Christian basis, I think it’s a good idea now, in the 21st century, to give that Christian basis a firm psychological foundation.
I hope this psychological foundation will encourage more blog entries.
And here it is – the psychological foundation to this website:
